A free Wi-Fi facility will be made available for students in all Nigerian universities in order to boost tertiary education in the country.
According to Surfwella, the firm unveiling the service, the initiative is aimed at ensuring that future graduates from universities across the country will compete with their contemporaries from other countries of the globe.
The firm which believes that the surest way to be an entrepreneur is to acquire Information and Communications Technology skills said it would make the free Wi-Fi available in all university campuses in the country.
Surfwella’s Chief Marketing Officer, Olusola Bankole disclosed that using the service is totally free. No payment, no subscription, no data purchase, and no need for modems. “It is free Internet in the most usable form on the Wi-Fi,” he said.
“The University of Abuja will be the first beneficiary, with the service scheduled for launch on the institution’s campus this week Wednesday.
“The Lagos State University will be next, followed in quick succession by the College of Agric, Lafiaji, and the University of Lagos,” Bankole said.
According to him, while the firm is unveiling the service at the University of Abuja and other institutions, it is still building and adding more features on the Internet infrastructure.
Surfwella which is a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of an indigenous 4G operator, Cyberspace Network Limited and a platform for social and cognitive computing says the free-wifi service is the firm’s way of giving back to the society.
“It is our own form of Corporate Social Responsibility. It is all about empowering the students to be globally competitive, and access to free Internet is the best way to empower the budding oncoming Generation-Z,” Bankole said.
Access to the services and information available on the internet is increasingly becoming less of a luxury and more of a necessity in our lives, whether we’re applying for a job, paying our bills, or studying for class.
BuzzNigeria recalls that in May 2017, the Lagos State Government intensified its smart city initiative with the unveiling of a free public Wi-Fi at the Ndubuisi Kanu Park, located at Alausa, Ikeja.
The free public Wi-Fi was launched at parks and gardens as part of the state government’s resolve to achieve the smart mega city status.
The Governor stressed that the number of gardens and parks in the state had increased with the recent opening of the Badagry Recreation Park. He said the free Wi-Fi service was part of his administration’s effort to make the state work for all and sundry.
According to Governor Ambode, the increase in patronage of parks and gardens spread across the state prompted the government to equip the centres with free Wi-Fi to serve the needs of visitors to the parks.
“Parks and Gardens are established to provide a conducive environment for recreation and relaxation activities.
“As you relax and enjoy the recreational facilities in these parks, we are making it possible for you to access your mails, browse and search the internet on your tablets, smart phones and laptops via a reliable public Wi-Fi,” Ambode said.
