=>Exclusive: Nigeria has over 6,000 illegal borders - NATFORCE - Naij.com

The director general of the National Task Force to Combat Illegal Importation of Small Arms, Ammunition and Light Weapons (NATFORCE), Emmanuel Osita Okereke has alleged the Nigerian Customs Service of undermining its efforts to reduce the influx of illegal arms into Nigeria. Speaking exclusively with Naij.com in Abuja on Thursday, February 18, Okereke revealed that Nigeria has over 6,000 illegal borders are currently being used to smuggle dangerous weapons into the country. He stated that some NATFORCE officials recently intercepted a truck load of arms from Ghana to Nigeria. He revealed that some Customs officials had illegal diverted a ship loaded with arms to Calabar adding that the said ship had come into Nigeria from Ivory Coast through the Onne seaport in Port Harcourt. In his words: “I monitored a ship loaded with arms from Ivory Coast to Onne seaport in Port Harcourt. When we notified Nigeria Customs that we wanted to be part of the inspection, they refused and immediately shut down the port. After two months, they diverted the ship to Calabar and that was the end of the matter.” NATFORCE DG Tells FG “Again, we monitored a trailer load of arms with a Ghanaian registered plate number to Onitsha. We apprehended the truck and handed it over to the police. The truck is still there at the state police command in Awka. The problem is, Customs believe that we are duplicating their job, which is not suppose to be so.” “Personally, my life has been in danger. I insisted that we must fight against illegal arms. They have paid so many people to assassinate me. They even bribed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the declare me wanted. Unfortunately, Ibrahim Larmode who declared me wanted embezzled over 2.5 trillion. “The Biafra people said they want to start carrying guns, well until we are allowed to begin full operation because right now, we are not allowed to do what we should really do,” he added.

Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that Muhammadu Buhari didn’t invite him to discuss vital issues. Obasanjo while speaking from Uganda on the Hausa Service of the BBC monitored in Jos defined President Buhari as a man of his words, stating that prior to the 2015 general poll Buhari vowed to fight corruption and was now being witnessed fighting it. Buhari had prior to 2015 election vowed to fight corruption and he is doing it. We are seeing how he is collecting the stolen money from corrupt officials,” Obasanjo said. When he was further asked on whether Buhari could save the economy of Nigeria from its current difficulties to the improvement of Nigerians politician said: “Yes, Buhari could do it. If he approached the economy like the way he handled Boko Haram problem, he would help the economy of the country.” When Obasanjo was a military ruler in the 1970s, Buhari held the key post of minister of petroleum affairs.  =>Naira Falls To N370 Per Dollar - Guardian News

The fall in the value of the naira is yet to abate as the local currency exchanged for N370 to a dollar yesterday at the parallel market.
It was observed that the fresh pressure on the naira since last week Thursday has seen the currency fell further from N318 to N370 to a dollar, an additional N52 margin.
While the Bankers Committee meeting held in Abuja last week Thursday was considering the inclusion of medical tourism and school fees payment abroad in the prohibition list, TheCable colloquium in Lagos, had some of its participants supporting the policy, as well as opposing devaluation.
Meanwhile, the foreign exchange reserves have fallen to $27.81 billion from $28.95 billion in barely six weeks, representing a decline of $1.14 billion. The Director of Corporate Communications, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Alhaji Ibrahim Mu’azu, said the reserves would have decreased to about $20 billion, but for measures adopted.

President Muhammadu Buhari, while in London, said that his government decided to stop the sale of foreign exchange to bureau de change operators because of fraudulent acts perpetrated by some top officers of the CBN. According to him, some directors of CBN own bureau de change and when foreign exchange comes, they take it to their companies and give government the change.
But the Acting President of the Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, told The Guardian that there is high-level leakages in the system, causing the pressure, adding that devaluation is not totally the answer.

He said government should put mechanism in place to ensure that whatever item everyone demands the dollar for, is actually imported and that quantity declared, alleging that some importers are also involved in the round-tripping.
According to Mu’azu, the renewed pressure in the market could be attributable to announcement effect and CBN is very much aware of the market development and has been responding accordingly, raising hope that as much as foreign exchange earnings improve, market interventions would also increase.

=>Soldier batters bus driver for sneering at him-Punch

A soldier, simply identified by his name tag as Emmanuel B.J., on Wednesday battered a commercial bus driver, Mr. Moshood Olaniyi, at the Ojodu-Berger Motor Park in Lagos State for allegedly sneering at him.
The soldier initially pounced on Olaniyi and thrashed him with horse whip before he used his fists to punch him.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Emmanuel ignored pleas by passersby and food vendors at the park.
Instead, he removed the vehicle’s key from the ignition and dragged Olaniyi down from the bus and battered him the more.
The soldier held Olaniyi’s waistband and threatened to kill the driver boasting that nobody would query him if he killed the driver.
When the crowd urged the soldier to state the driver’s offence, Emmanuel B.J. slapped Olaniyi again for more than 12 times.
He said, “Who does he think he is? I will kill him and nobody will query me. I have killed many people who are older than this idiot (Olaniyi) in the past and nobody queried me for that.
“The idiot attempted to hit me while reversing his vehicle and when I asked him why, he just sneered at me. If at all he is older than me, I don’t care. I will do to him what he will never forget for the rest of his life.”
Emmanuel dragged Olaniyi to the park of commercial motorcycle operators, a distance of about 50 metres, before he released him after much pleading that lasted for about 45 minutes by eyewitnesses and other motorists.
Olaniyi was later advised to seek medical attention due to the extent of the assault.
Olaniyi, who could hardly open his mouth to talk because of his swollen lips after the soldier released him, denied that he sneered at the soldier.
He said he was reversing his vehicle when the soldier suddenly pounced on him.
One of the witnesses, who identified himself simply as Festus, said the beating was too much, adding that he did not expect that Olaniyi could still stand on his feet after the soldier released him.
Festus said it was the beating that drew his attention from where he was fixing some mechanical faults in his vehicle.
He said, “I did not know the cause of the disagreement between Olaniyi and the soldier, but from what I saw, Olaniyi was sitting in his vehicle when the soldier started beating him. I didn’t know whether Olaniyi sneered at the soldier or not.”
A bread seller at the motor park, who preferred to be addressed as Ajoke, said she witnessed the assault from the beginning to the end.
Ajoke said she joined other passersby to beg the soldier to let Olaniyi go when it appeared that he was not ready to stop the beating.

The EFCC challenged the jurisdiction of the Lagos court to entertain the suit, adding that Oduah’s claims were baseless and speculative.

Vanguard reports that the directorate of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) made this disclosure on Tuesday, noting that they Nigerian media could not rival the technological superiority of the radio station. News had made the rounds on Monday of how Buhari sacked the media chiefs, as Sola Omole of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA); Ladan Salihu of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN); Sam Worlu of the Voice of Nigeria (VON); Mike Omeri of the National Orientation Agency (NOA); Emeka Mba of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and Ima Niboro of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) all got the boot. And in his address, IPOB’s coordinator of coordinators, Clifford Iroanya informed that inspite of the huge amounts of money pumped into the development of the media firms, they could only come up with dismal performances in their responsibility of outshining Radio Biafra. He noted that the federal government-owned stations had boasted of effectively neutralizing Radio Biafra and went to town partying for their phantom success but “To their chagrin, Radio Biafra continued to broadcast to the entire humanity with more devastating and damaging evidences of structural deficiencies inherent in the British concoction called Nigeria. “Radio Biafra has been able to raise the consciousness of Biafrans as well as the International Community on the plight of Biafrans and provided incontrovertible evidence that Biafra consists of the present-day South-East, South-South (except Edo state), Igala in Kogi state, and Idoma in Benue state.” The statement also read that “the ‘divide-and-rule’ strategy fashioned against Biafrans by the British and their Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba accomplices were effectively deconstructed and destroyed by the superior evidence, logic, and research undertaken by the Editorial Board of Radio Biafra.

=>  Drama In Aso Villa As FG Justifies Buhari’s Foreign Trips-Vanguard

It was nothing short of a melodrama at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday, between State House correspondents and the Federal Government over the many foreign trips of President Muhammadu Buhari during a press briefing.
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information, who justified the trips, said they were necessary to bring the country back on the track of development and growth. According to him, Nigeria was a pariah state under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said that under Jonathan’s watch, corruption permeated the country, such that foreign investors deserted it. He stated that it was necessary to tell Nigerians that the trips had started paying off since investors’ confidence in the country had been restored. Mohammed spoke during a press briefing at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting in Abuja. He said: “You do not run a country by being isolated. The personal presence of Mr. President in many of these fora is important because before now, we were almost a pariah state.

Journalists had waited patiently to be briefed on the outcome of the Federal Executive Meeting, FEC, which routinely meets to take decision on matters of government. => President Buhari Orders Mass Sackings At Budget Office-Punch

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the complete purge of the Budget Office because of the discrepancies and padding of the 2016 budget, The PUNCH has learnt.
Our correspondent gathered on Wednesday that the President handed down the directive following the embarrassment that the budget discrepancies had attracted to his government.
It will be recalled that Buhari had on Monday sacked Mr. Yahaya Gusau as the Director-General of the Budget Office for the same reason and approved the appointment of Mr. Tijjani Mohammed Abdullahi as his replacement.
But a top government official who pleaded anonymity told The PUNCH on Wednesday that the President was not yet done with the issue.
The source said Buhari had been properly briefed of the activities of government officials in the Budget Office who were described as “budget mafia” and accused of sabotaging the budget process.
He said that a decision had been taken that while many of the identified officials would be sacked, the remaining ones should be posted out of the office.

He added that the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, had been directed to implement the presidential directive and communicate the decision to the affected officials.
The source said, “The President is really angry over the discrepancies discovered in the 2016 budget. It has been confirmed that it was a clear case of sabotage. It was said to have been carried out by a budget mafia whose members are strongly enshrined in the office.

“The President’s decision is that the former Director-General should not be the only casualty in this matter.
“He has ordered that the Budget Office should be purged. Many of the officials there will be sacked while others will be transferred to other places other than where they have already constituted themselves to a mafia.”
When asked when the President’s directive would take effect, the source said “it is with immediate effect.”

=> EFCC picks up Diezani’s husband - Nigerianeye

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, invited Alison Amaechina Madueke, husband of embattled former Petroleum Minister, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke. Madueke, a retired Admiral of the Nigerian Navy and former Chief of Naval Staff, was picked up in Abuja yesterday morning by EFCC operatives over alleged money laundering to the tune of $600,000 through his personal accounts.

Admiral Alison Madueke (Rtd) An EFCC source close to the interrogation confirmed to newsmen last night that Madueke was summoned in connection with some funds, which were traced from some suspicious transactions into his account but did not give details of the transactions.

The source did not also say whether the transactions had anything to do with his wife, Diezani, who many believe authorized the controversial oil deals now rocking the industry. But a source close to Madueke said the man was simply invited to make some clarifications and nothing more. “They think he has some clarifications to do.

The invitation by the EFCC certainly had nothing to do with the wife. He reported there, cleared the air and he was asked to go back home,” the legal practitioner said. A top EFCC official said the man was asked to appear before them to make clarifications on certain issues related to some financial transactions traced to his account.

The source hinted that although Madueke had been cautioned and released on administrative bail, he might be asked to report back on a future date.
