Why Nigeria needs Social Media Bill to Curb Irresponsible Journalism an article by Tony Ogunlowo

This article is not going to win me any new friends – especially in the blogging community – but in the spirit of democracy I believe a bill to curb the irresponsibility of some bloggers and social media users is necessary after all.

In a country that’s just getting to grips with the concept of free speech, many see this proposed bill as an attempt to gag free speech as the incumbent President did in 1984 with his infamous Decree 4.
I don’t think it’s the intention of the sponsors of the social media bill to return to the throwback days of controlled press and free speech but to police it, weeding out what I would refer to as rogue bloggers, for instance, who publish, sometimes, malicious lies about people and the government.
Blogging , tweeting and commenting on the various social media sites has become a new way for the ordinary person, in the street, to share their opinion about anything with anybody out there in the vast online community without fear of restriction or persecution. But there needs to be checks and balances.

The wanton spread of malicious lies, rumours or hearsay is punishable by law in all countries around the world.
As a blogger myself I have a moral responsibility to ensure that whatever information I share with my readers – on Facebook, blogs, twitter etc – is the truth. It would be irresponsible, for instance, to post an article or link suggesting the government was planning to do something they were not or post lies. In the dangerous world we live in today that can lead to mass civil unrest.
There are a lot people who use the social media platforms responsibly and some who don’t – these are the ones the bill is aimed at.

Even though its and unwritten rule, bloggers for instance are bound by the same code of conduct as journalists – stories need to be researched properly and only the truth, not rumours or lies , can be published or posted.
Most bloggers have a subscriber base that runs into hundreds of thousands, and if they’re in the league of Perez Hilton or the Kardashians that figure can run into millions and millions – more than the circulation of most regional newspapers – and an incorrect story, rumour or lie will go out to all of them causing untold embarrassment to an individual concerned. Now if a journalist, OAP or newscaster spreads a false story the latter could be sued for libel or defamation of character. It shouldn’t be any different for somebody who posts something on any of the social media platforms. You can’t have one rule for one and one for another.

Anyone, bloggers included, have to take full responsibility for whatever they publish or post online. You can’t go round slandering, spreading malicious rumours or lies about someone or the government and expect to get away with it!
In light of this let’s take a look at some recent litigation concerning some rogue social media users from around the world:
- Under section 127 of the Communications Act of 2003 of the United Kingdom 1,209 people in 2014 were convicted for sending indecent, offensive or obscene messages.
- In April 2014 a Dutch girl was arrested for joking about hijacking a plane on twitter.
- Wrestler Hulk Hogan was fired by the WWE over an N-word rant on twitter.
- In 2011 Jordan Blackshaw and Perry Sutcliffe-Keenan of the UK were both jailed for 4 years after creating a Facebook event encouraging a riot.
- In 2013 Yang Xiuyu was arrested by Chinese authorities for spreading rumours online.
So bloggers and social media posters get your stories right! Only publish what is the verifiable truth – not rumours or hearsay – because if this bill goes through, a spell in Kirikiri prison or a hefty fine is not an interesting prospect!

After some seconds of deep thinking, I heaved a sigh and drew closer to Chioma. “baby I have to go and urinate. I’ll be back shortly” I whispered to her, equally signalling to Jboy at the same time to follow me.

Together Jboy and I went outside for a little talk. I showed him the text from Mary, biting my lips with regret. “too bad” Jboy frowned, shaking his head in deep thought. “how did such a mess happen?” He asked curiously, while I wasted no time in giving him the details of the sex I had with Mary weeks ago. “Gosh if not handled appropriately, this can ruin the beautiful relationship you are enjoying with Chioma. Chia” he hissed with concern. “What do I do?. I’m so confused” I asked seriously, breathing quickly as I looked forward to a solution from him. “There are two sides to this situation. Either she’s is lying to get you or telling the truth” he murmured thouthfully. “but I advise you let today pass before calling to speak to her. That will make her think twice about the effectiveness of her text {message}” he advised, while I nodded in agreement.

My initial plan was to call the silly girl in order to confirm the text she sent to me, but Jboy was a professional in such matters and so I had to go by his suggestion. Chioma followed me home that fateful evening, and for the first time opened herself to me, offering all she had to me. Her sweet, slender, attractive body was all mine, but unfortunately I wasn’t in the right frame of mind for sex.

All that was in my head was Mary’s image. I was so miserable and lost that Chioma soon noticed my lost appearance. “What’s wrong with you? Don’t tell me you haven’t kissed or made love to a woman before? Why are you trembling before my nakedness? Don’t you like what you are seeing?” She curiously asked with alarm clearly written all over her. I murmured a quick apology, grabbed her right bosom and sucked on it, while my other hand played on her second bosom. I really had dreamt so much of making great love to her, but when I finally got the opportunity, I wasn’t fit to perform very well. I felt like telling her the truth, sharing my problems with her but just couldn’t. Mary was my cross, mine alone to carry. I never knew a player’s life could be so sweet and bitter at the same time. I was ready to quit, ready to face life in an honest way and settle down with Chioma. Only if God would make my outrageous sin with Mary go away. “I know you are just not yourself. Whatever is it that is worrying you, I pray you get over it soon” Chioma said to me very early the next day as she prepared to leave. I forced out a smile, saying nothing.

I truly never got myself all through the rest of the previous day. The sex we eventually had was so dull and far from sweet. I couldn’t help but imagine what was going through her mind that moment. I truly left her unsatisfied and disappointed. Later in the day, I braced up myself and called Mary, asking her to show up at my house by 7pm. She accepted without dragging issues with me which was very mind settling. However it was a long wait for me as I nervously waited for the clock to struck 7pm. My mind was uneasy, my lips prayed ceaselessly while my heart pounded very fast. I had to make my past with the silly girl go away no matter the price. She finally showed up at my apartment at exactly 7:32pm, looking well composed and calm. She flashed a brief smile at me, greeted and settled quietly at a couch opposite where I sat. “you know the reason I called. Are you pregnant for real?” I asked without wasting time. She breathed deeply, fetched a piece of paper from her hand-bag and gave to me. I sweated as I went through it. It was a pregnancy test result. Positive it said, duly signed and stamped. “So what do we do?. You very well know I don’t need this baby nor ready to start a family?” I asked coldly. She shrugged and drew back. “I don’t know. That’s your decision to make, as for me, I’m not tampering with this pregnancy. It’s against my faith, moreover a child is a gift from God” she said slowly, mincing no words and putting me in a very tight corner. She really looked unconcerned and serious. I was left with no choice than to change my tactics. “Okay how much do you want?” I asked with a business tone. Her eyes instantly burned as my question hit her like a bullet. “What?, what do you mean?” She asked with a quick stammer. I smiled and breathed deeply. “You understand me my dear. How much do you need to get rid of that thing and let me be with my life” I said coldly.

She jumped up with anger, disgust and hatred, shaking her head with disbelief as she headed to the door. “Gosh l’m so disgusted at you. How dare you utter such foul words. I see the devil has possessed your soul. Your heart is now dark and burning like hell. This isn’t the Brother Ken I know” she cried. I was so stunned and touched over her words, but the problem at hand was such that gave no room for emotions. I had to conceal my feelings and shut my heart. “Mary I’m really serious. I have the money to settle you handsomely” I added as I stood up. She hissed, gave me one last look before leaving without another word. I bit my lips and locked my door. I couldn’t believe all that was happening were real. I was so desperate and anxious. The last thing I wanted was having children scattered over the country in my name or having a child with a woman I was far from loving.

 The next day was a public holiday. I spent the day at home thinking and polishing my plans which were far from perfect. Chioma showed up by 12pm, helping me to prepare a delicious rice, stew and soup. Her company was what I needed that moment to calm my mind and the tension in me. But her curiousity almost got on my nerves. She was very sure that I was keeping something away from her and kept demanding to know what it was. However I got the shock of my life by 3pm when Mary’s pastor showed up at my apartment. “Bro Ken there is a serious issue at hand” he said as I opened the door for him.

I walked into the Pastor’s Office to meet the pastor, his wife, Mary and a church elder discussing happily. They all smiled at me as I walked in. The pastor quickly stood up, offering his hand for a handshake. “my heart is overjoyed. Sister Mary’s testimony really made my day. I’m so happy for you. She’s a wonderful woman. You are blessed” he said as we shook hands, while his wife and Mary nodded happily. I was filled with rage, very angry with the pastor for not even giving me the opportunity to confirm Mary’s testimony. Perhaps he did it with good faith, because he might have felt Mary wouldn’t have announced our relationship in the church if I never sanctioned it.

I bit my lips, nodding like a drugged rat. The church elder stared at me strangely, his eyes fixed on me as if he was seeing a vision. “I have to pray for God’s favour on you and our dear sister, though you still will need to keep an appointment with me on Saturday. There are lots of things we need to discuss, because as you know, you are not yet a full fledged member of this church” he said, smiling at me, before signalling to his wife, Mary and the elder to stand up for prayers. After the long prayer, I hurridly left the office, leaving Mary rudely behind as I dashed for my car where my friend was waiting for me. Jboy couldn’t help but laugh his heart out as I sadly told him all that went through in the pastor’s office. “o boy I can’t wait to be your bestman” he laughed. “I go smash your head. Imbecile” I barked jokingly.

Ten minutes later, I dropped him at his apartment before heading to mine. I really wasn’t in the mood for anything, not even to listen to jboy’s solution. All I wanted was just to sleep and think over my life. I was about dozing off in the sitting room, when my door bell rang, waking me up. I cursed, scratched my head and answered the door. Of course it turned out to be no other person than Mary. She stared at me with fear in her eyes, her right hand shivered under the weight of a polythene bag she held. I stood unmoved, blocking her way with an angry stare. She nervously watched me for some seconds, not knowing what to make of my mood. “What’s up with you?, What’s happening?. What did I do wrong?” She asked with a frightened voice. I scoffed, drawing back a little, putting more fear into her with my behaviour. I was very determined to end everything that moment. I wasn’t scared of the consequence nor any bit scared of hurting her christian heart. All I cared for was myself and myself alone. She meant nothing to me. “I beg of you. In God’s name, what’s happening?” she asked again. Tears quickly formed in her eyes, but I wasn’t perturbed. I was very determined and cold. “Mary I don’t want to see you ever again. It’s over between us” I said slowly, watching her reaction keenly. She drew back with surprise. Her mouth opening with great disbelief. “what?, I don’t understand you Bro. Ken. I thought we were…” she desperately tried to say something, but I interrupted her, nodding with a crazy smile. “you heard me right” I murmured. “I beg of you, let’s talk this out. Just thirty minutes of your time is enough. I think I deserve such. Please” she quickly begged, controlling her tears and displaying a fake smile. I stared at her for some seconds, shrugged and obliged. Quietly she walked into my sitting room, carefully sat on a sofa and faced me. “Please tell me the truth?, what’s behind your sudden change in behaviour. I’m an adult, please hide nothing from me” she begged with a calm grace, staring at me with eyes filled with dashed hope. I drew close and held her hands. “we have to end this because I’m not comfortable with you anymore. I don’t love you, let’s just be friends” I said slowly.

She breathed deeply, and drew back a bit. “just like that?. No Bro. Ken. Born-again Christians don’t behave that way. Tell me?, why the sudden change of heart. I don’t just understand. Today is Sunday of all days, please be serious” she managed to murmur with disbelief. I rubbed my face and swallowed hard. “You have to get going now. Please I need a little peace” I barked, dragging her strongly on her feet. My action totally surprised her. She tried to resist but I was stronger. Tears quickly drew down her cheeks. “Why are you doing this to me?, why are you shattering my hopes. You don’t love me anymore, but why, it isn’t fair. God is watching” she cried as I pushed her out of my apartment. I felt miserable but satisfied, paying no attention to her cries as she banged on my locked door asking for another chance. As I returned to the sofa, my eyes fell on the nylon bag she brought. I quickly grabbed it in order to flung it out of my apartment, but unfortunately the hand tore, pouring a well perpared meal of rice, chicken and salad in my sitting room.

I moved on with my life the next day. My busy office schedule helped forget all about Mary and her problems. Jboy couldn’t believe his ears after I narrated how I sent Mary away from my apartment. He was extremely pleased and according to his words ‘he wouldn’t have done any better’. I never heard from Mary for the rest of that week and the next, which was a very welcomed development. I equally stopped attending her church and moved over to catholic church which was my true church of baptism {where I was baptized as a child}. After laying low for a while, by keeping to myself.

I started another wonderful relationship with a colleague, a very pretty damsel who was just transferred to our office from Akure. Chioma being a professional and an experienced girl, refused to give into my too many tricks, thus making our relationship a boring but respectful one. I slowly began to grow more fond of her much to Jboy’s surprise. Two weeks later, precisely on a Sunday evening. I was relaxing in a quiet bar with Chioma, Jboy and his new girlfriend when a phone call from Mary came through. I ignored the call, frowning slightly while my mind flashed back to the memorable times I had with her. “only if she never played that church stunt on me, perhaps we would still have been together” I reasoned. Mary called four times which I carefully ignored.

She then sent a text message which totally shattered my mind. My eyes enlarged as I read it while my hands shook. “I’M PREGNANT. WE NEED TO TALK” were the words she sent. Very short and precise but enough to send my nerves flying. The evil that we guys do often lives with us, but surely I wasn’t ready to live with mine. She was the least person I wanted as the mother of my children. I was left with no choice than to act fast, by doing what exactly??

I shrugged, nodded and pointed to the bathroom, which she calmly went to. She however complained of waist pain, after freshening up, claiming it was hurting her very much, thereby forcing me to insist she spend the night with me, without knowing it was all part of her cunny schemes. Of course she never mentioned my name, but it wasn’t enough to prevent most of the female church members from throwing unguarded stares at me as if they all knew about us. The rest of the congregation simply followed her eyes which were well fixed on me as she talked, clapping and nodding in approval to all she said. “I came to this church hopeless, helpless and lost. But the Lord wiped away my tears, dragged me up and consoled me with a perfect gift. A real man. I won’t mention his name for now, because our Daddy, our great pastor is yet to sanction our union, which hopefully he will do today.

This is God’s church. My dear sisters your time of happiness is at hand. Never cease praying” she happily poured out. Ending her speech with a very touching song which lit the whole church aflame with cries and prayers. They were all happy for her. I knew I had to leave the church for good before I become the biblical Saul who was converted on his way to commit more crime against Christians.

I truly wasn’t ready to turn a new leaf. Supposing I were, the big mouthed Mary wouldn’t even fall in my 40th choice. At the end of church service. I quickly ran out of the church premises with Jboy {my accomplice}. “o boy, e be like your hook caught wrong fish ooo” he asked seriously as we rushed to my car. “my guy e worst than you think. Na d fish swallow me and the hook” I murmured, shaking my head and breathing deeply. “don’t worry I have a plan” he assured me, stopping and facing me with a serious look. But before he could say another word, one of the church ushers rushed up to us. “excuse me sir. Our pastor is waiting for you at his office. Sister Mary is there already” he announced seriously.

All my struggles were rewarded with a good job at the end, but what did I do with my new found status? I ate, drank and smoked women like gari, from campus girls, to working class chicks, from young female teachers to cute attractive executives. I counted my census with no holds barred. I soon became friendly with a rich young banker popularly known as Jboy, together we rocked the city swimming and sinking in honeypots of willing girls, but the more we did our thing, the more hungry we got, until Jboy came up with a very weird idea, which was for us to carry our adventures to the church. At first I declined, but when I saw him get down with three hot sisters I became a born again Christian by force, changed my name to brother Kenneth, a name I used in fishing for holy ladies. Within two Sundays, I befriended Sister Mary, a lady older and much more matured than I. I know you must be wondering why I went for such older lady, when there are lots of younger girls everywhere?. Well I had no time for the younger ones who needed much more convincing and good deeds to lure when there were willing hot ladies, dying underneath their long gowns and skirts. By Wednesday, after the second Sunday of my born again life, Sister Mary an active choir member honoured my invitation.
She came to my house and we spent the rest of that evening arguing and quoting the Bible.

Friday she honoured my invitation again, but instead of quoting the bible, we went for a hot delivering session on my bed, where I plunged into her honeypot like a diver, hitting and rotating my joystick in her sweet pot as if I was turning a hot soup. INTRODUCTION  
Yvonne Okoro is a popular Ghallywood and Nollywood actress of Nigerian and Ghanaian origin. Her father is Nigerian and her mother is Ghanaian, She feature mostly in Ghanaian movies, Yvonne is an award winning actress with a lot of fans both in Nigeria and Ghana. Her figure and prettiness has been a real controversial thing since she's been in the spotlight.




EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND  

Born to a Nigerian dad and Ghanaian mother, Yvonne Okoro is of mixed lineage and calls herself an African. She comes from a very large family, as the first child of her mother and the fifth of all siblings. She started showing traits of an actress as a child. She attended Achimota Preparatory School after which she went to the Lincoln Community School and then to Faith Montessori School.

She was born Yvonne Chinyere Okereke Okoro to a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother. Ever since she hit the silver screens, movie lovers in the two countries, Nigeria and Ghana have silently struggled to ‘claim’ her but she insists that the Africannes in her supersedes all other lineages.

Report has it she spent most of her Childhood-growing up time in Ghana, but she revealed in an interview that she's been close to Nigeria also, Her comments below:
"I’m very close to my Nigerian lineage.  When I was a child, my father used to bring us home. Particularly, when we  were on holidays and during festive periods.
I’m familiar with my ancestral home.  My dad is a very  patriotic Nigerian, right from the beginning. He realised the need to link us up with our roots, even though we were still kids then."
She is the first child of her mother, and the fifth born of all siblings from both parents. Her strict dad who believes in education didn’t like the fact that she chose acting over education, but the fact is that Yvonne has not chosen the screen over school.
She has had a long walk through the corridors of formal education and she has plans to keep walking. Yvonne attended Achimota Preparatory School, after which she went to the Lincoln Community School then to Faith Montessori School. The Mfanstiman Girls Senior High School was her next stop.
She later studied and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Linguistics from the University of Ghana, Legon. She continued later at the Universite’ De Nantes in France, where she studied French Civilisation and Culture as well as Drama and Marketing.

CAREER AND LIFE  

Yvonne got launched into the in the movie industry in 2002 after her Senior High Education. Her first movie was ‘Sticking to the Promise’ produced by the Nigerian producer, Theo Akatugba.
She also played a cameo role in the hit miniseries ‘Tentacles’ produced by the same producer for Point Blank Media Concepts.

Her good performances in the above productions ‘threw’ her into a big movie, ‘Beyonce’, which was her first major movie. She starred alongside Jackie Appiah in the Abdul Sallam Mumuni film produced by Venus Films.

Speaking on her experience as a first timer in an interview;
"I think I was lucky to have Sparrow Production on board because they were able to organise most of the logistics. All I did was to pay the money and get involved. From the location to props, they were more involved. Mostly what they do is like get three locations and call me to come and check them out. So I go with the Director, Shirley and they ask which I prefer. We all bring our heads together and choose the one that is the best. It was a lot of work and I respect producers a lot now. It made me realize that I am a terrible producer. I am just hoping that with my next one, I will be more involved."

She has more than 12 movies to her credit. Selebobo is a popular Nigerian music producer,dancer and singer, He came into limelight in 2013 after producing many hit songs for big Nigerian artists, He has since then produced more hits after that. He co-wrote the Johnny song with Yemi Alade in 2013, As at 2015 he is signed to Iyanya's record label TrippleMG.




EARLY LIFE AND BACKGROUND  

Udoka Chigozie Oku a.k.a, Selebobo was born into a Christian, musical & artistic family in the early nineties. He is the seventh of twelve children Selebobo hails from Ukpo, Oranto Village, Dunukofia L.G.A. of Anambra State.

Selebobo is multitalented. He is not just an artiste; he is also a Song-writer, Dancer, Audio producer and Sound Engineer. It would not come as a surprise to know that he wrote and produced majority of his songs.

Creativity flows in his bloodline. His talent was nurtured by his father, Mr. Goddy Oku, a known guitarist and musician of the 70's. He started ‘recording’ at the age of 7 in his dad's studio (Godiac Studios, Enugu) and by the time he was 12, he had started producing with his little Yamaha Djx keyboard.
In an interview he talked about how it all started: 

"When I was little, in primary school, it’s kind of funny (laughs) but I grew up knowing that I can always go to a studio; my dad owned a studio – he still does. Every time I finish from school, he takes me to the studio before I go home, so that has been my life. I found myself playing with some of his instruments – he didn’t like it at first but I was stubborn, he eventually let me be. When I finished secondary school I decided to take it to the next level."

His parents encouraged him.  They all were in support, unlike some artistes that often tell stories of how their parents did not support their career.  His own is different.  They are fully in support of his music career  and they’re always there for him.

For someone so young, Selebobo is a force to be reckoned with. In his own words, his style of music is ‘Naija Hip-hop which is fusion of African flavour and Hip-hop’. He is a breath of fresh air. His unique and dynamic style is heavily influence by his childhood idol, Michael Jackson. This influence can be seen in a few of his songs. Despite his many talents, Selebobo is down-to-earth, kind-hearted and God-fearing. He believes that his inspiration comes from God. Impossibility is one thing he doesn’t believe in. Meeting him with a pencil opens a whole new world of difference about this rising star.
When asked in an interview;
When did you drop your first single?
"Really, I can’t remember the year.  I think it should be after my secondary school.  That was my first official single but that’s not the first song I recorded.  The first song I recorded was in primary school, but I didn’t drop it.  Recording, for me is not today’s thing.  It’s something that I have been doing over the years." He replies.


CAREER AND LIFE  

He dropped three songs officially before Triple MG. He counts his career from that song, Yoyo that is a hit.  He dropped two after that before joining Triple MG.
On his relationship with Iyanya and how they met; he said he started developing a relationship between them in 2013 he believed there was this chemistry between them because he actually wanted to work with Iyanya so they started as a family, from there he saw himself being signed.

As a graduate of Fine and Applied Arts, you should not be surprise if you see him busy drawing with a pencil, so that makes him also an artist. Selebobo is the producer for majority of the song in the Made Men Music Group {Tripple MG} Album “The Evolution” released on 29th May 2014. He has his production signature behind alot of hit singles on the likes of Johnny by Yemi Alade , Ada Ada by Flavour and Mr Oreo by Iyanya just to mention a few. You wrote and produced “Johnny”, what inspired the concept?
He says; From my own point of view, I felt that the female artistes in the industry weren’t really kicking the guys in the “ass”.  So I really thought of Johnny because the guys have been known to use hardcore female names like; Ifunanya, Carolina, Uju – and I was like come on why haven’t female artiste done something like this. I looked for an English name that we pronounce in a local way, that’s why I chose Johnny – I believe that’s why it stuck.

In 2015 Yemi Alade thought it wise to dedicate her MAMA award to her producer Selebob. She said if not for him the Jonny song would have been an RnB song and not a dance hall hit

When it comes to Selebobo's stage performances,you don't want to blink at all.As a break dancer,he drew more inspiration from his group, "SHADOWS", that partook in the Malta Guinness Street Dance Africa Competition 2009.He believes that all his inspiration comes from God and well nurtured by his Father, Mr.Goddy Oku, a well known guitarist and musician of the 70's.
